While some writers thrive in the intense activity offered at summer writing programs like Simon’s Rock and Sewanee, others benefit more from one-to-one coaching closer to home.  Seetch recently concluded a batch of summer applications with student writers headed to those programs.  Now we have begun to line up tutorials for the summer.

The content of a formal letter may be conveyed warmly or coolly, notwithstanding its formal appearance on the page.  Recently, we wrote several letters of resignation for a client who wanted to express gratitude and respect toward the employer he was leaving and, at the same time, to preserve the professional distance appropriate to the occasion.

In situations like applications (for employment and promotions, fellowships and scholarships) the cover letter serves to focus the gist of the matter for both applicant and recipient.  Like a magnet on a blank sheet of paper sprinkled with iron filings, the letter organizes disparate materials—the enclosures and attachments that form the evidence for any application–into clear, persuasive patterns.  Done right, such a letter opens doors.
